The City of Wanneroo is planning for the future upgrade of the Wanneroo Recreation Centre precinct. The project aims to ensure our community facilities will meet the future demand and growth of our Central region.
Council resolved at its December 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting to:
DISCONTINUE work on the development of the Wanneroo Sports Hub at Scenic Park, Wanneroo.
REQUESTS Administration progress the replacement of the Wanneroo Recreation Centre with the intent to establish two buildings.
a new or refurbished Community Hub on the site of the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre; and
a new Sports Hub – Administration to investigate alternate sites within the Central Ward for a new Sports Hub including lot 504 (11) Leach Road, Wanneroo adjacent to the Wanneroo Sports & Social Club
REQUESTS Administration to maintain the current project timelines and design consultants if possible
The New Sports Hub is currently pending following community consultation. The design and construction have not been finalised until this has been presented to the December Ordinary Council Meeting with the community consultation results.
Council progressed with a revised schematic concept design at the July OCM 2025, addressing environmental and safety requirements. The updated design repositions the building closer to Scenic Drive, reducing bushfire risks and environmental impacts while retaining functionality.
Community engagement is planned to inform stakeholders of these changes, with construction expected to begin in mid-2026 and completion by mid-2027. The project, estimated at $21.2M, faces a $10.4M funding shortfall, with additional funding options under review.
Two Council Reports were presented to the November 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting, requesting Council approval for the Provision of Architectural and Specialist Consultancy Services and the Provision of Cost Planner Services. Both items were passed, and the project moves into detailed design phases for the Sports Hub.
The Wanneroo Recreation Centre Precinct Upgrade has been split into two projects. The Wanneroo Sports Hub and the Wanneroo Community Hub.
A Council Report was presented to the June 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting to consider the outcomes of community engagement on the proposed concept design of the Wanneroo Sports Hub and future options for Wanneroo Recreation Centre Upgrades.
A Council Report presented at the July 2023 Ordinary Council Meeting included updated concept plans and estimated completion timeframes, with the project split into a Sports Hub and Community Centre precinct.
On Thursday, 9 September 2021, the State Government announced a $5 million commitment to the update of the Wanneroo Recreation Centre.
