This privacy policy explains how I collect, use, store, disclose and protect your personal information. I value the privacy of residents and ratepayers and treat the protection of your privacy as part of my commitment to accountability and integrity in carrying out my duties.
I run this website and communicate with the community in two related ways: as an elected member of the City of Wanneroo, and in connection with my role as a public representative (including community engagement and campaign activity). I handle personal information consistently with the Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) in the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) across all of these activities.
Where my work involves Council business, the City of Wanneroo is the public entity responsible under the Act, and information you provide for Council matters is also handled under the City's own privacy policy. Nothing in this policy limits your rights under that policy or under the Freedom of Information Act 1992 (WA).
I only collect personal information that is necessary for my functions and activities. Depending on how you interact with me, this may include:
I do not collect sensitive personal information such as your political opinions, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs or health information. My surveys ask only about your satisfaction with my work, your views about the local area, and your satisfaction with the City of Wanneroo, which are general feedback rather than party-political or voting information.
If this ever changes, I will update this policy and only collect sensitive information with your consent or where the Act otherwise allows.
I collect personal information directly from you wherever practicable: when you complete a form on my website, email or phone me, write to me, respond to a survey, or interact with me on social media.
Some of my surveys and consultations are run using Formly, a third-party survey platform. When you complete one of these, your responses are collected and stored by Formly under its own privacy policy, which may involve storage outside Australia. Wherever a survey is distributed, I will include a short privacy notice that points back to this policy.
At or before the time I collect your information, I will take reasonable steps to make sure you know: who I am and how to contact me; the purposes for which the information is collected; how it may be used or disclosed; and how you can access your information.
You have the option of dealing with me anonymously or under a pseudonym where it is lawful and practicable to do so — for example when making a general comment or raising a community issue that does not require a personal response. If I need to identify you to action your request, I will let you know.
Sometimes the people who contact me or respond to my surveys are under 18. Where I collect information from a young person, I take extra care: I keep the information I ask for to a minimum, explain why I need it in plain language, and consider whether collecting and using it is in the young person's best interests. I will not knowingly use a young person's information in a way they would not reasonably expect.
I collect and use your personal information to:
I will only use or disclose your personal information for the purpose for which it was collected, or for a related purpose you would reasonably expect, unless you consent to another use or the Act otherwise permits it.
I will disclose your information to a third party only in these circumstances:
I do not sell your personal information, and I do not disclose it for unrelated marketing.
Some of the online services I use store or process data outside Australia. These include Google (Google Analytics and website hosting), Formly (survey responses stored in the United Kingdom), and social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
When you use these services, your information may be handled overseas under those providers' own privacy policies. Where I disclose personal information to a recipient outside Australia, I take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Information Privacy Principles.
I use tools provided by third parties, including Google and my internet service provider, to collect and view website traffic information. The information collected may include your device's IP address, the site you came from, and the pages you view. You can manage or disable cookies through your browser settings, and opt out of Google Analytics using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
I use social media (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn) to share and promote my work and to engage with the community. When you contact me through these services I may collect your personal information, but I use it only to communicate with you. The platforms also handle your information for their own purposes under their own privacy policies.
Most of the contact information I hold is kept in an electronic contact list. I take reasonable steps to protect the personal information I hold from misuse, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure — including keeping it on password-protected devices, limiting access to myself, and reviewing it regularly so it does not hold more than I need.
I keep personal information only for as long as it is needed. For contacts and correspondence I hold as your representative, I generally keep information for the duration of my term of office (usually four years). When information is no longer needed, I take reasonable steps to destroy it or permanently de-identify it.
Where information forms part of a Council record, it is also subject to the City's recordkeeping obligations under the State Records Act 2000 (WA).
You have the right to ask for access to the personal information I hold about you, and to ask me to correct it if it is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. To make a request, contact me using the details below. I will respond within 45 days of your request.
I do not use automated decision-making processes to make significant decisions about you. If this changes, I will update this policy and provide a way for you to request human review.
If a data breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, I will act promptly to contain and assess it. Where required, I will support the City of Wanneroo in notifying the Information Commissioner and affected individuals.
If you have a concern about how your personal information has been handled, please contact me first so I can try to resolve it. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner (WA) under the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA).
If you have any further questions about this policy, please get in touch:
This policy provides general information about how I handle personal information and is not legal advice. It should be read alongside the City of Wanneroo's privacy policy and the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA).
